Make your video private

YouTube allows you to create 'unlisted' videos. An unlisted video is a different type of private video. "Unlisted" means that only people who know the link to the video can view it (such as friends or family to whom you send the link). An unlisted video will not appear in any of YouTube's public spaces (such as search results, your channel, or the Browse page).

You can choose to make any of your uploads an unlisted video in your YouTube Account settings. Here’s how:

  1. Sign into your YouTube Account
  2. Go to your My Videos page
  3. Select the video you’d like to make unlisted. Click the Edit button to access the video’s settings.
  4. Go to the Privacy section of the page. There you’ll see the option to mark you video as “unlisted”, “public”, or “private”. Select unlisted.
  5. Don’t forget to click the Save Changes button. Once you’ve done this your video will be an unlisted video.

Vimeo provides an option to password protect videos.

  1. Sign into your Vimeo account.
  2. Click the My Videos tab.
  3. Select the video you wish to make private and click the settings icon (cog).
  4. Click the Privacy tab.
  5. Update the following settings to maximize the privacy of your shared video.
    1. Under Who can watch this video, select Only people with a password
    2. Enter a password (You will submit this password along with the video link)
    3. Under Where can this video be embedded, select Nowhere
    4. Under Who can comment on this video, select Noone
    5. Under What can people do with this video, uncheck the Add it to collections box. You can also uncheck the Download it box if you wish.
